What ?
Web 2.0 is just a termed coined to tell everyone that we have entered a version of the World Wide Web internet. But what does that means ? It means that now there is a thin line between desktop and web applications, not to mention mobile applications are also catching up. The web 2.0 applications like Flickr, Gmail etc are easier, faster and can practically be accessible anywhere anytime.
When ?
I would like to give full credit to Google and affordable broadband internet. Lets face it, the technologies and methodologies powering Web 2 are not new ! Javascript, XML, AJAX (formerly also known and Remote Scripting) were been used for a long long time. Google proved once again that “Winners don’t do different things, they do things differently“
How ?
Allow me to give you a flashback. Before Gmail stormed us, the leaders were likes of Hotmail, Yahoo, Rediff and AOL. They all were severing same technology and methodology but in different forms. So what did Google do? They made web based email very simple, faster and effortless experience. I guess that is what you mean by a true Web 2.0 Application.
Where ?
In my opinion Google has once again proved that now there is fine line between Desktop Applications and Web Based Applications. A real life example is Google Document. In case you still have not checked it out, just sign in to your Gmail and click the “Documents” link on the top right corner. Google documents are capable of Viewing, Editing and Sharing word documents, spreadsheets and presentations. All this via a Web 2 based application. I guess you get the picture now:
A Typical Web 2.0 Application would be:
- Platform Independent.
- Browser Independent.
- Can be accessed anywhere any time.
- No need to install any additional software.
- Sharing is a click away.
To conclude, thanks to innovators and true web leaders like Google, we are now looking at a world where you would be able to use all your application, access your data and files, remotely. You also have Virtual Desktops like AjaxWindows and Nivio which makes it possible to carry your desktop anywhere you go. I strongly believe that as mobile devices will become faster and smarter, in all likelihood the Mobile Applications are due a revolution.
